Currently, universities across China have integrated generative artificial intelligence into the entire thesis writing process. When undergraduates or graduate students utilize AI for tasks such as conducting research, formatting documents, or performing basic computational work, this approach can reasonably reduce the time spent on mechanical, repetitive tasks within the thesis. However, allowing students to delegate the core argumentation and expression of viewpoints in their theses to AI may lead them into territory where academic integrity is violated, thereby creating opportunities for misconduct. At present, the AI tool management policies issued by most universities still lack detailed guidance and have not been designed with feasible, measurable operational procedures tailored to the various stages of the actual thesis writing process; as a result, the definition of "compliance" remains unclear, and faculty or academic administrators lack a unified, objective standard for identifying non-compliant practices. Drawing on recent empirical case studies-both positive and negative-regarding the use of AI in thesis writing, this paper categorizes thesis writing into six fundamental stages and examines, within this framework, whether it is necessary to impose restrictions on the use of AI at each stage. The paper proposes a three-tiered management approach-"fully permitted assistance," "limited, case-by-case use," and "strictly prohibited"-provides quantitative reference standards designed according to specific disciplines and academic timelines, and offers feasible policy recommendations addressing the individual students, faculty responsibilities, and institutional frameworks. These reflections on AI governance serve as a guiding resource for academic personnel on how to appropriately utilize AI, and can also provide localized empirical support for universities seeking to enhance their academic culture and uphold academic integrity.
